ELD Standard: Grumgully and the Simic

Once upon a time, there was a goblin named Grumgully who lived in the magical land of Eldraine. Grumgully loved Eldraine and thought that it was a beautiful place. All of the cats, turtles, elves, and goblins were amazing creatures to mister Grumgully. He loved them so much that he would give them gifts to help make them stronger.

Then the humans moved into Eldraine. These humans were loud, boisterous, and awful creatures, and started to ruin the beauty of Eldraine with their ugly buildings and stinky knights. Grumgully was angry. He was so angry that he had to vent to his friend Oko. “How dare the humans invade our peaceful land. They are stinky, mean, and violent creatures that have ruined Eldraine.” Oko thought for a second, and then said to his small blue goblin friend “Grumgully, would you be interested in driving out the humans?” Grumgully nodded his head vigorously “those nasty humans need to be taught a lesson”. Oko looked off in the distance. “In that case, I’ll be back in a moment” and vanished in a cloud of leaves.

Grumgully tapped his foot in anticipation. How rude of him to just leave me here, and not tell me what he was going to do. But then Grumgully remembered how the humans treated his people, and if Oko said that he can do something to stop it, he was willing to be patient. Then came a swift and strong breeze, and Oko stepped out of a tree.

“What took you so long Oko??” Grumgully stormed over to the tree.

“I was getting us some friends” and Oko stepped to the side revealing a wide assortment of Merfolk, Elves, Dogs, and even what appeared to be a Fish Octopus Crab! The strange creatures looked around confused while Grumgully looked at his army with glee. “Thank you so much Oko, I won’t let you down”. Grumgully gave each of these creatures a gift, and together they stormed the castle. And they all lived happily ever after.

Grumgully is a new card from Throne of Eldraine and if you build the deck correctly, he can promise you a wealth of riches. Using the Adapt mechanic from Ravnica Allegiance, Grumgully can immediately trigger these creatures that care about +1/+1 counters being placed on them. With Grumgully on the battlefield, Growth-Chamber Guardian reads as a 2 mana 3/3 that draws another 2 mana 3/3.

Getting these triggers immediately instead of having to wait for the ability to trigger makes these cards significantly stronger, and gives a great power boost to Simic adapt decks. With Grumgully, Jiang Yanggu, and Rhythm of the Wild there is a great density of effects that can give your creatures +1/+1 counters which means the deck is less likely to fizzle without its payoff. If you like putting dice on your creatures and triggering sweet abilities this is the deck for you. Thank you all for reading, I hope you have a great week and an amazing Tuesday!
