Ishai & Kediss – Voltron Lizard – Commander Deck Tech – Command Valley

Hey guys, this is Landon with the Command Valley, bringing you another Commander deck tech article from Commander Legends! Thank you to Game Grid for sponsoring our channel; if you want to check out their new and improved store and support our channel while doing it, check out this link here. We have a copy and pastable list at the end of this article that you can paste right into their deck builder and buy your singles there. Please check out our YouTube channel, subscribe, and give us some likes and comments. We really appreciate it!

Today’s tech will be on the partner pair, Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker and Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar. This is my first time ever brewing a Partner commander deck, and honestly, after playing this deck, I’ve had a change of heart for partner commanders. This was a ton of fun and I’m excited to show you this deck!

The strategy for this deck is to ramp Ishai out as soon as possible because he gets bigger every time our opponents play a spell so we’ll want to take advantage of that right away. Once Ishai has gotten huge, we bring Kediss in and start dealing a ton of damage to all our opponents! Something to note is that the extra damage from Kediss is NOT commander damage but we will still be dealing a ton of damage with these two out together.

RAMP

As usual, let’s begin by talking about the ramp in this deck. It is really just your run of the mill mana rocks–we are in Jeskai after all. They all cost two mana or less, that way we can bring Ishai out on turn three which is really crucial to our strategy. I have included the following ramp cards in my version of the deck:

PROTECTING OUR STRATEGY

General Protection

Because of our not-so-subtle strategy, Ishai is going to be a MASSIVE target and threat to our opponents. They are going to be trying very hard to remove it, so let’s go over the cards we have to keep Ishai safe. These are some of the more general protection spells we can employ to keep out strategy from being thwarted:

Interactive Protection

In addition to our more general suite of protection spells, we’ve got some counterspells to also keep Ishai safe from spot removal–or to stop big game-winning threats. Here are the counterspells that I am running:

CANTRIPS & DRAW

This deck also has a spellslinger sub-theme which is right up my alley. I am running a bunch of smaller cantrips (spells that make you draw a card in addition to other effects) and some bigger draw spells. I’ll start with listing the spells, and then we’ll go over the payoffs. Here are our cantrips and draw spells:

SPELLSLINGER SYNERGY

This next section is my favorite part of the whole deck. We’ve got a kind of combo with three different cards that have Curiosity effects. It is not infinite, but it is incredibly powerful and fun. If you enchant Curiosity or Ophidian Eye onto or soulbond Tandem Lookout with Ishai while Kediss is out, you will be drawing up to three cards every time Ishai attacks–depending on how many opponents you have–which is crazy! Additionally, I am running a bunch of creatures that ping our opponents whenever we cast an instant or sorcery. Combine that with our Curiosity effects and we are going to be drawing so many cards. Here are the cards I suggest you include for this section:

REMOVAL

As for ways of dealing with our opponent’s threats, I’ve tried to keep the removal really low to the ground. Because running counterspells is not always enough–plus we really want to use those to protect Ishai more than anything–I have included a longer list of removal spells than you might be used to. Out meta and the EDH community seems to be moving in the direction of including a lot more interaction lately anyway. Here is what I will be including:

EXTRA DAMAGE

This next category is for making Ishai deal as much damage as possible as quickly as possible. Temur Battle Rage, Boros Charm, and Duelist’s Heritage will give Ishai double strike, which is incredibly potent.

BOARD WIPES

Lastly, we are playing a decent amount of board wipes, as we’re pretty low on creatures, and we don’t want to be overwhelmed. Here is how I will be blowing up the board:
