Phylath, World Sculptor – Land of the Free – Commander Deck Tech – Command Valley

Hey guys, this is Landon with the Command Valley, bringing you another Commander deck tech. I’m super excited about today’s deck because it’s on another creature coming soon in the Zendikar Rising set. It’s Avenger of Zendikar! Oh, wait, no. Sorry, it’s his little brother, Phylath, World Sculptor! Phylath is such a cool creature that makes us a bunch of plant tokens when it enters, and can make those plants super buff with its landfall ability!

This deck was a little challenging for me because this is so outside of my comfort zone. In a lot of games, I almost completely forget about the combat step because I play mostly spellslinger decks which is more my style. But, honestly, after brewing this deck up, it seems like so much fun. This deck focuses on basic lands, abusing landfall triggers, and wants to end the game by swinging in with big creatures.

Let’s dive right into our insane ramp package. We’re looking to put as many lands into play as possible, through creatures and spells.

RAMP

Creature Based Ramp

As you can see, the idea with our ramp creatures is to make them relevant in the early game as well as the late game. In the early game, these cards do what we need the ramp in our deck to do, help us cast our bigger spells faster (especially our commander). If we already have Phylath out when we play these creatures, we will get to pump one of the plant tokens he already made for us. Our noncreature ramp works the same way, of course.

Noncreature Ramp

I’ve included more ramp than the average deck would use because it’s super important for us to get as many lands onto the battlefield as quickly and as repeatably as we possibly can. The ramp cards that get us multiple lands into play during a single turn are VERY good at giving us explosive turns when Phylath is out.

LAND SYNERGY

Speaking of getting lands out quickly and dropping as many as possible during our turns. These cards have strong synergy with lands that help us get more or have good Landfall abilities.

 

 

DRAW

Card draw is obviously super important–and it becomes even more important in a deck that uses a lot of cards to just put lands into play. These spells will help us refill our hand.

 

 

INTERACTION

Interaction is always important in every deck so don’t forget it! Especially be sure to take advantage of Gruul’s ability to destroy creatures, artifacts, and enchantments fairly easily.

 

WIN CONDITIONS

This deck is seeking to win with combat damage–whether it be from the plant tokens our commander makes or these big spells and beefy creatures:

 

 

LAND BASE

Our land base is incredibly simple. Since our commander only cares about basic lands, we’re only going to be playing basic lands! Super budget-friendly, and we don’t get wrecked back Back to Basic like effects that sometimes are really troublesome.
